This facility is specifically designed for evaluating the structural performance of large, complex structures, such as full size ship components and sections, under static and cyclic loads. The facility is capable of developing loads necessary to test to failure a 1/3-scale model of a destroyer.
The facility includes a strong floor 40 feet by 100 feet by 7 feet thick of heavily reinforced concrete, with tie downs located on five foot centers. Each tie down is rated at 250,000 pounds. Loads are applied to the test structure through hydraulic actuators using up to eight 50-gpm pumps as part of two independent 3500 psi hydraulic pumping systems.
To move large structural components the facility has a 30-ton overhead crane with 50 feet of clearance. The instrumentation system for the facility is capable of recording up to 2000 data channels.
